sub plans 4/6

Good Morning,

I have told both classes what they must finish.

1) Yesterday students finished investigation 4.4 a-c. The first half of class, they must finish the rest of the investigation. After 20 to 25 minutes, ask for three volunteers to work d2, e2, and e4 on the dry-erase board

2) Once those three problems are done, students should turn to investigation 5.1, and read the text.

3) Once everyone has read the text, play this video
soa gr 5 1

4) Students should work in pair groups on the investigation.

6) While students are working, have a student check homework (7a:Caitlin 7b:Grady)

7) Whith 7-10 minutes left, play this video
soa inv 5 1 summary

8) If there is time remaining, the class can play heads up 7 up or you can have a student(s) play the pyramid panic game from the blog site

The eighth grade has some added insentive, so please let me know how well they work today.

sub plans 3/22

It's amazing how the best laid plans can be unraveled. On Thursday our custodian ran over my microphone cord with the vacuum cleaner and it broke. As a result, I could not record what I was originally planning for the day and unfortunately you will have a more traditional substitute day. I am sorry.

1) Have a volunteer from each class check the homework.

2) On my desk there are two piles, one for 8th grade and one for seventh. Pass out the partner quiz (one per group). Students will take the partner quiz with the person that they normally sit next to. Students have as much time to finish the quiz as they need, although I doubt it will take the whole period. Once the group is done, they should turn in the quiz to the turn in slot (they know where that it)

3) After groups turn in the quiz, give each student the riddle work sheet that is under the quiz. Students can work in groups of two to finish it. Students should turn in the work sheets (even if they do not finish) at the end of class for grading.

Homework due Tuesday

graph and find the equation

Table 1
x 1 3 5 7
y 4.4 3.2 2 0.8

Table 2
x 1 3 5 7
y -2.33 1 4.33 7.66

There are no videos. Rember that in math you follow the pattern. Don't just plot the four points, extend the line so that it crosses both the x and y axis. That way, you are better able to find the y-intercept. For the slope, draw the slope triangle and label the rise and run. Slope is rise over the run (a fraction). Don't convert the slope to a decimal, just substitiute the slope for m in the equation y=mx+b.

sub plans feb 23

To play the videos, please unplug the microphone from the computer and turn the volume up on the board.

1)Warm-up: Copy one of the riddle worksheets and pass it out. Students should do one side for their warm-up.

2) Investigation 1.2:
Students will read investigation 1.2 and then do the investigation. They should remember that slope can be found by (y2-y1)/(x2-x1). Caitlin, Claire, Sara, Paige, and Katie can be useful in 8a for helping the class. If needed, they should find the equation of one line on one of then white dry erase boards that can be saved for the next class.

3)Pass out the algebra sheet for the week (it's on the front table and it's one page)
Students should do the multiples of three.

4)Pass out the CSAP packet. It is due tomorrow. I have some originals that are not stapled on top. If you are having troubles reading, those should be better. Mrs. Degi's printer is needing a new cartridge desperately. I have one problem on the blog that you can view if you need to fill time.

Slavens Mathletics update

This Saturday the math team competed in the MathCounts Regional championships which had teams from public and private schools from Denver, Douglas, and Arapaho Counties. The Slavens Math team qualified 5 mathletes for the state championships which is more then any other school! Delainey, Sara, Caitlin, Claire and Joe all will have a chance to compete for a state championships. Also in the competitions, Brian finished in the top 25%, CJ finished in the top 30%, and Sophie Knauf finished in the top 50%. A special note, Delainey had the highest score of all 300 competitors in the second round of the competition! These results represent a real accomplishment that we sould all celebrate.

I would also like to thank Sarah Graff and Sarah Armstrong for coming and cheering for our team with green and white pom poms in hand.

Please let these students know how proud we are them when you see them.

Wednesday alert

I am a bit disappointed that there were so many issues with the csap pockets last week. I know the copies were the best, but they were definitly readable and since the all the questions are explained on the blog, there should be no problems getting them done.

So here's the deal. On Wednesday there will be an open book/notes timed test on the csap packet. Any notes you take tonight on the blog videos will be usable tomorrow.

Homework due Monday

You will need either a paper or you could also use an online source.

Your assignment is to create two sets of two box-and-whisker plots.

1) The first set will have a box plot for the points the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts have scored in the in the previous 18 games. (Each team is a seperate box plot on the same axis)

2) The second box plot will have the points allowed for both these teams in the previous 18 games. Each team is a seperate box plot on the same axis)

3) Judging by these box plots, who do you think will win todays super bowl?

If you forget how to make a box plot here is a refresher

sub plans 1/07 - s&p inv 1.3

Barb, I forgot to say that the last period mathletics class should do the mock competition that is on the desk. They should do the individual round. This round is with calculators and each page takes 6 min. The kids know what to do. After, check the answers and have volunteers explain problems that several people got wrong.

There is a competition on Wednesday. Those who are on the official traveling team need to get permission slips from me tomorrow. Please remind me.

1) play warm up video. pause to allow kids to work, then play the explination

sp inv 1 3 wu

2) I launched the investigation 1.2 yesterday. Students should work in pairs to finish. Make sure that everyone actually makes the graphs as described in investigation 1.3

3) Before students start the investigation, play this video

sp inv 1 3 how to make a box and whisker plot

4) There is no homework tonight.

5) during the investigation, have someone check homework (clipboards are on the low grey file cab)

6) Students in mathletics need to work on correcting their competitions from Tuesday. They may use the binder to check their work. If someone has completed their corrections, then you can give them one of the competitions on the desk to work on.

7)we will summarize the investigation on Friday
Thanks,

Kirk
